Animal Cruelty Must Stop Essay -- Equality for Animals
Meat is considered to be a go-to meal for many at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. What most do not think about is where their burgers or chicken wings are really coming from. Animals live dangerous lives in enclosures and cages, where they are forced to eat and sleep against their own will. Peter Singer discusses some of these issues in his article, ââ¬Å"Animal Liberationâ⬠and how this freedom will take time and commitment. Singer talks about the harsh treatments of these farm animals and the factory farming that goes on behind the scenes. He knows that animals cannot express their feelings through words, so their actions should be acknowledged instead. Because the animals are not necessarily kept healthy and taken care of, eating animals or their byproducts is not as beneficial as an individual would think and therefore, to remedy the situation, they ought to have an equal life to humans. Peter Singer is a Professor at Princeton University, graduate of the University of Melbourne and Oxford University, and an author and editor of dozens of books. Ethics are very important to him, because he is an animal liberationist and fights for the rights for these animals. Singer states, ââ¬Å"A liberation movement demands an expansion of our moral horizons, so that practices that were previously regarded as natural and inevitable are now seen as tolerableâ⬠(Singer 205). In his article, he discusses his thoughts on liberations going on today. Mentioning the different liberations only adds to his stand, because describing how other people feel towards issues allows for his views to be equal. Some of the liberations Singer notes are Gay Liberation, Black Liberation, and Womenââ¬â¢s Rights. People that support these movements know how ... ...ns being fed to the animals that are just going to be killed. Around 70% of antibiotics go to livestock to prevent diseases in CAFOs where animals live all crammed together. Some cons may be that eating meat has been an essential part of human evolution for about 2.3 million years. Eating meat allowed brain size to grow and develop as well as taste buds evolving to crave the taste of meat. Schlosser, Eric. Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal. Harper Perennial, 2005. http://www.amazon.com/Fast-Food-Nation-Dark-All- American/dp/0060938455 There are different types of fast food and the ââ¬Å"meatâ⬠we are eating. Many unhealthy or clean ways of eating and touching food. Including the type of food people eat in fast food places.

The First Transcontinental Railroad :: American History
The First Transcontinental Railroad missing works cited ââ¬Å"May God continue the unity of our country as this railroad unites the two great oceans of the worldâ⬠(Mayer 213). This famous quotation was engraved on the gold spike that connected the two fragments of the first transcontinental railroad. It describes the significance of the railway to the rapidly growing United States. The transcontinental railroad was of tremendous importance to the development of the Union because it opened the western frontier to increased settlement and represented the growing integration of the country. It stimulated trade between east and west, and transformed the dormant frontier into an essential component of the Union. A very different situation existed before the completion of the transcontinental railroad. The western region of the United States was almost completely separated from the east. Travel between the two regions was agonizingly long and difficult, and transportation of goods was costly and inefficient. There were three main routes that could be taken to travel from the east to the west. The first was an expensive four-month sea voyage around the tip of Cape Horn. The second route was the particularly challenging horseback journey through the malaria-infested swamps of the Isthmus of Panama. The final option was to travel across the US mainland by wagon, which a strenuous and lengthy expedition. The settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute, the acquisition of Mexican territory, the discovery of gold in California, and the spirit of manifest destiny were various motives that inspired people to undergo the journey across America. Many people soon believed that a transcontinental railroad would be enormously beneficial to the country. The bitter feelings between the North and South resulting from divergent economies, life styles, and opinions on the divisive issue of slavery needed to be resolved before attention could be concentrated on the transcontinental railroad. By 1860, the North and South had developed two very different economies. The primarily agricultural South relied on its chief crop, cotton, which accounted for a good deal of US exports. To produce cotton in such large amounts, the South depended on the plantation system, and thus on slavery. The North however, was an industrial giant and had no desire for slave labor. The South avoided industrialization and imported nearly all manufactured goods. Therefore, they vehemently opposed high tariffs.

Yawning: Anthropology and Healthy Functional Person
Ryan Casey Anthropology in the News Contagious Yawning Contagious yawning is something you canââ¬â¢t control. Infants after 11 weeks after birth start yawning and studyââ¬â¢s say that around the age of four, children start to develop ââ¬Å"contagious yawningâ⬠. Doctors use this to see if the child has a disorder such as autism. What the doctors would do is see if the child response to someone elseââ¬â¢s yawn. If the child does respond then they would know if the childââ¬â¢s brain is functioning right. This is a good way for doctors of even parents to pick up if there kid has something wrong. The contagious yawning theory would be part of the social and cultural subfield of anthropology. Contagious yawning would represent social anthropology because it shows the way in which the body works and how it response to certain moves and actions that other people makes. Also, it would prove to be in the cultural subfield because it shows a pattern in the human body. Humans ar e not the only species that yawn. Studyââ¬â¢s shown that all vertebrates yawn such as snakes and lizards. But only humans, chimpanzees and sometimes dogs had shown that they respond to other people yawning, known as contagious yawning.People have been yawning for as long as humans have been around. This shows that yawing and contagious yawning is in the human culture, and a sign of social bonding. Contagious yawning would be more proven in human biology because it is a reaction of the body when the brain recognize someone else yawn, it sets off a trigger in your brain that makes someone looking at someone yawning also yawn. Anthropology provides vital knowledge and information in this case of contagious yawning. This is shown in the story when they mention how the body develops overtime and when young infants at an early age of four show signs of contagious yawning. Also, it tells us how some primates and all vertebrates also devolve the theory contagious yawning. Contagious yawni ng is a shown is something that a healthy functional person cannot control. It is shown in the social and cultural subfields of anthropology and shows facts to support human culture, human biology and human history. Anthropology provides facts and knowledge about contagious yawning.

Japanese Dining Etiquette
Japanese Dining Etiquette Remembering your correct manners is very important in Japan, especially concerning the area of dining etiquettes. This applies especially to foreigners, who should try to remember at least the most basic rulesâ⬠¦ In Japanese meals, it is customary to say ââ¬Ëitadakimasuââ¬â¢ (ââ¬ËI gratefully receiveââ¬â¢) before your meal, and ââ¬Ëgochisama deshitaââ¬â¢ (ââ¬Ëthank you for the mealââ¬â¢) after you have finished. These traditional phrases are to show your appreciation for the meal, especially when someone cooks for you.The best way to start your meal is with a sip of soup. Then you should eat a little bit of each dish, in a ââ¬Ërotationââ¬â¢, until you finish all the dishes at about the same time. Do NOT complete one dish of food before moving onto the next. Remember that if you are eating from communal dishes, it is considered an important etiquette to pick up the food using the opposite end of your chopsticks, or serving ch opsticks if any are provided. Do not start drinking until everyone at the table is served, and do not pour any drinks for yourself. This should only be done by others, and naturally, it is also your responsibility to periodically check your friendsââ¬â¢ cups and fill them up if they are empty, too. NEVER stick chopsticks into rice standing up, as this is how rice is offered to the dead. If you havenââ¬â¢t already heard, it is perfectly acceptable to slurp your noodles in Japan, as people say it tastes better, and it also shows you are enjoying your meal. Remember that it is considered very rude to burp, blow your nose at the table, and talk about unappetizing topics.Lastly, remember to finish every little grain of rice in your bowl or plate, as rice is considered very precious. Also this shows the chef you appreciate his/her food very much. It is also considered polite to return all plates and dishes back to their original positions, and to place chopsticks back in their paper slips or holders. Of Mice and Men â⬠Most of the characters of the novel is loneliness Essay
ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ is a novel written by John Steinbeck in 1937, based on Steinbeckââ¬â¢s personal experiences relating on life on the ranches. The characters, George and Lennie, are some of the characters that have Steinbeckââ¬â¢s aspects of his life seeing as they are the main characters of the novel. In the novel Steinbeck highlights the social conflicts of that time period, such as the climatic changes cause by drought and the financial collapse of 1929, which had increase unemployment and poverty throughout the United States of America. One of the most important aspects that is attached with most of the characters of the novel is loneliness. Steinbeck has purposely named the town Soledad because in Spanish Soledad means ââ¬Å"lonelinessâ⬠and it shows the reader how lonely the town is. Loneliness motivates characters to seek an alternate way of life. The characters that start off together end up being separated up in the end like George and Lennie, Candy and his dog and Curley and his wife. Everyone on the ranch is lonely; this is because all the men in the bunkhouse are single. An example of this is when George says ââ¬Å"They got no familyâ⬠. This means that they are like orphans because they do not have a family and no one to care for them. The men that live in the bunkhouse also have nothing to look forward to, except work for the rest of their lives. Even though George has Lennie with him, he is still feels lonely and an example of this is that in the story they show Lennie play the game solitaire, which is only played by one person and is not a team game which means that there is no social interaction. It is also because George has all the responsibility and to take care of Lennie because Lennie is not responsible. This makes the other characters find it strange that they travel around together because most of the ranch hands tend to travel around alone. This can be seen when Slim is surprised at the closeness of their relationship, ââ¬Å"aint many guys travel around together.â⬠This shows that having company is unusual and being lonely is now seen as normal. Candy is also very lonely because during the novella he loses his dog and he also loses his dream. His life is the total opposite of his name because the name ââ¬ËCandyââ¬â¢ gives us an image of sweet things but the character Candy is the total opposite. His dog provides him company and has been his life for a long time. This can be seen when he says, ââ¬Å"I had him ever since he was a pup,â⬠which shows that the dog was someone he was able to care for which provided him with a family. The killing of Candyââ¬â¢s dog is a reflection of attitudes of life on the ranch because the characters do not have any friends or family themselves, they fail to understand human attachments and relationships. This can be seen when Carlson says, ââ¬Å"Whyââ¬â¢nt you shoot him Candy?â⬠It shows that Carlson isnââ¬â¢t very sympathetic and he canââ¬â¢t understand how strong a bond is between Candy and his dog. It also mirrors the attitude towards Candy himself as on the ran ch when you fail to be useful people just get rid of you. Another character who is lonely is Crooks. He is lonely because he is isolated due to the colour of his skin, he is the only black man in the book and at that time, America was a very racist place and Crooks is persecuted. He is only referred to as ââ¬Å"niggerâ⬠, ââ¬Å"stable buckâ⬠or ââ¬Å"crooksâ⬠he is never referred to by his actual name which suggests that no one is bothered to get to know him. His loneliness is perhaps the worst in the novella as he lives alone away from everybody else. This can be seen where it says ââ¬Ëhe had his bunk in the harnessââ¬â¢, this shows that he is more likely to be lonely as he is isolated from the other ranch hands purely based on the colour of his skin. This can be seen in the quote that says ââ¬Ë A guy goes nuts if he ainââ¬â¢t got nobodyââ¬â¢ , this suggests that he may have literally gone insane with loneliness. However, it is clear that he craves companionship and this can be seen when Lennie comes into his living quarters and he does not stop talking, clearly showing that he yearns for company as he is terribly lonely. It is ironic because he ahs a copy of the California Code in his room which is meant to protect the rights of black people in America, but it is very clear that this is in fact a symbol and not a reality for men like Crooks, who is unable to socialise or be accepted as a ranch hand due to the colour of his skin. Curley was aggressive man and is referred to fighting. This is because he looks like a boxer and Candy say that he is ââ¬Å"handyâ⬠, which means that he fights well. Whit also says that he was in the finals for the ââ¬Å"Golden Gloveâ⬠which is a boxing competition and it shows us that he likes fighting. In relationships, no one likes Curley and he does not get any respect from anyone. This shows us that he is also lonely because even though he is married, his wife is not happy with him as she thinks she has missed many opportunities by living with Curley and the lonely men. The only time Curley is shown with his wife is when she is dead. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife wants to have recognition, attention, her own identity and her own life. Steinbeck has not given her a name on purpose to show how she has none of these things. She does not have her own identity because she is seen as just someoneââ¬â¢s wife and without Curley, she would be nothing. She is very lonely because no one seems to love her because Curley is not very affectionate. She is continually looking for companionship because she says ââ¬Å"Think I donââ¬â¢t like to talk to somebody everââ¬â¢ once in a while?â⬠This shows that she too is lonely and possibly even more isolated as the other ranch hands do not want to talk to her for fear of upsetting Curley and it clearly shows that Curley does not give her the attention she craves and desires. She tries to desperately get the attention of the other ranch hands by dressing up when she goes to see them. She is described as having ââ¬Ëredââ¬â¢ nails and lipstick, the colour ââ¬Ëredââ¬â¢ suggests love and danger, which means that she automatically repels people that she needs for company. This shows she is incredibly desperate and sad, and she is going to the barn looking for cheap thrills and an ego boost. In conclusion, Steinbeck has presented the theme of loneliness successfully in various ways. He has explained how the life on ranches can be very lonely even if you are still around people. He has done this by making George tell Lennie how the life of a ranch-hand is among the loneliest of lives and by making some of the characters confess their deep loneliness to Lennie and George which shows how desperate they are by admitting to complete strangers.

Muslim jesus Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Muslim jesus - Essay Example In Islam, however, while Jesus is not divine, he certainly existed and was regarded a great teacher of his day. Upon examining various accounts of Jesus and his time spent on earth, it is prudent to conclude that the Muslim account of Jesus is more similar to the true account of the historical Jesus as compared to the Jesus of the Christian faith. This report will, therefore, reflect the reality that the historical Jesus can be seen as more of a zealot or criminal as opposed to a divine being, as recounted in the varied accounts of the Christian gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. While Islamic teaching does regard Jesus as having been a human being who was a messenger of God, the Muslim faith rejects the idea that he was God, nor was he the begotten son of God. In fact, Islamic scripture teaches that anyone who believes that Jesus either God or the Son of God is Shirk. This is to mean that the individual has committed the sin of idolatry, as Islam teaching comes form the express point of view that there is only one true God, and that His prophet is Muhammed. To attach any status approaching divinity to the personhood of Jesus is simply wrong and cannot be accepted under the Islamic faith1. Muslims simply cannot reject the notion of Godââ¬â¢s divine oneness, as that is a fundamental tenant of their faith. As such, to make the claim that the Muslim Jesus is divine would be equatable to committing an unpardonable sin. One of the arguments in the Christian faith is that Jesus is divine as represented by the concept of the Trinity. This is to say that God, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Sprit (the Essence of Jesus that has remained after His ascension to Heaven) are all divine and the same person. As such, since Jesus is part of the Trinity, Christians argue that He was and still is divine in his own right. This, again, rejected by Islamic teaching2. The Muslim perception

Triple Steel Corporation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Triple Steel Corporation - Essay Example As the discussion highlights in the initial assessment of the company, the current assets of the company have declined as the total worth of the company has also deteriorated comparing from the last year results. Since the revenue of the company has reduced by 2.37 Million as compared to last year, the assets of the company have also decreased but not in the same proportion. The cash and cash equivalents have decreased by 1% while the trade receivables have reduced by almost 60% which does not correspond with the loss decline in the revenue for the current year which was only 11%. The inconsistency between the two corresponding figures requires some additional concern over revenue and receivables. This paper outlines that à the inventory of Triple Steel has not decreased by the same proportion as the closing stock of the company stood at 3.55 Million which was down by 14% while the cost of goods sold was up by 1%. It has also been identified that the company has used two different methods of valuation of inventory at the year end as the method of valuation of inventory must remain constant throughout the year. In addition, the IAS doesnââ¬â¢t allow the use of Last-in-first-out method of valuation of inventory. The prepaid tax and insurance figures saw a decline by 23.53% as the revenue has also declined for the company and the company also incurred a loss of 49,000 this year compared to the profit of 1.795 Million last year. The property, plant and equipment of the company have increased by 3.7% which includes the purchase of land, building, equipment and machinery during the year. This has also given rise to the depreciation expense of the year which was nearly 8.8%. This may be because of the depreciation method used by the company such as the reducing balance. The current liabilities of the company have increased by 16.15% which include major increase in the amount of accounts payable which has increased by nearly 14%.
